Early industrialist Robert Owen (1771–1858) was a pioneer. His model textile mill and village in New Lanark, Scotland, are possibly most known for him.
Early factories had incredibly difficult working conditions that put everyone’s health at risk. Children as young as five or six years old would frequently work long shifts (typically at least 13 hours per day, six days per week) under the same conditions as adults. The welfare (or lack thereof) of their disposable workers was not as important to factory owners as the upkeep of their pricey machinery. The fact that Owen valued his staff as much as he did the equipment he owned was one of his strengths. He is rightfully credited as being the father of personnel management since he looked at working conditions and practices and tried to improve them.
